Tuesday, September 8, 2020 Welcome (Back!)

NEW!! Welcome to what will likely be one of the most unique years of all of our lives. We are glad that you are have chosen to make this class a part of your day here at MSHS! For some, this has been a most challenging time, so let’s be mindful of each other, now that we are back together again. We plan to do all we can to make certain you are both safe and that choir is a home away from home, where you can just be yourself!

NEW!! If you have not yet done so, please complete the  Emergency Information Record and the Parent Volunteer forms that I emailed you and your parent/guardian a few weeks ago. These two forms are due by this Friday (Sept. 11th @ midnight). +2 points on your grade!

Additionally, the iChat form allows the district to complete a background check and must be on file in order to volunteer for anything school related…including choir! Turning in the iChat form with a copy of your parent/guardian’s drivers license will earn you an additional extra credit point.

Here is a link to the “Welcome Back” letter I sent out, which contains links to these three forms, as well as other information: CLICK HERE

Links to all forms and other info can also be found under Pages on the right side of our choir blog. Use Pages to quickly find things like our calendar, scrip information, and “green sheets.”

NEW! We also need to collect your choir shoe money, $30 (if you are new) by Wednesday, Sept. 23rd. (+1 point  if returned by the deadline). Returning choir members, middle school choir members that purchased the official choir shoe in middle school, as well as current HS band members do NOT need to purchase shoes–you have them already (unless you want a new pair of course).

We will get you fit for choir shoes this fall.

If you have difficulty meeting the deadline for the money owed, please have your parent/guardian email me, write me a note or give me a call. Or, just stop by and chat with me. We have ways to help you out if needed…no worries!

“Matilda, The Musical” Officially Cancelled-Ticket Refund (Time Sensitive) Below

It is with great regret that I have to inform you that we have officially cancelled our production of “Matilda, The Musical” at Mona Shores High School, here in Muskegon, Michigan.

Although with high hopes we kept pushing our dates forward since the March 13th shutdown of all Michigan schools, we realize we are forced to outright cancel at this point. As you know, nearly everything artistic from amatuer to professional productions, concerts and festivals of every type have been cancelled well into fall here in West Michigan and even our school is still closed at the present moment, even to staff.

And, after sending out a survey recently to all of our cast, we realized that we no longer have total buy in from them, and many are seniors who are now about to embark on new jobs and experiences or have families who don’t consider doing this production to be safe for their kids. Lastly, even if things were to open up a bit more by July, we would still have to limit our audience sizes and that, coupled with the loss of income from having to cancel our spring “Pop Go the Sailors” show and  our annual “Young Americans” Summer Music Camp, we simply cannot afford to do the production any longer, as much as it pains us all. Needless to say, our students, families, friends and artistic staff are devastated.

Therefore, Mona Shores High School Choir regrets that Roald Dahl’s “Matilda The Musical” must be cancelled due to recent concerns for the health and safety of our community due to COVID-19. We ask you to consider donating your ticket purchase to support our program. If you would like to offer your purchase as a donation, no further action is needed. If you require a refund or would like to offer some of your tickets as a donation and refund some, you can email tickets@showtix4u.com with a refund request. I must warn you that the ShowTix ticket fee charges are non-refundable and I apologize for that in advance but it is beyond my control. Please make this request at your earliest convenience, as we will be officially closing down our ShowTix4u.com box office for this production on Sunday, June 21st at 7:00 pm.

We truly appreciate your patience and your continued support, and we look forward to better times in theater ahead!

Sincerely,

Shawn Lawton

Pop go the Sailors “Stays Home” Audition Results

Pop go the Sailors “Stays Home” Audition Results

Congratulations to the following virtual acts that were chosen among 43 audition videos that were sent in and then scored by the staff of the MSHS Choir Department. Scoring was based upon the same criteria that we use to judge the Pop Go the Sailors when we have the auditions “live.”

Thanks to all that took the time to audition and it was wonderful to see you all again, even if virtually. I also want to thank choir senior Timmy Schneider for pushing to make this production a reality and for mixing the sound for many of the acts, to choir senior Connor Fritz who, beginning today, will edit the videos and create a professional looking production, to our choir staff judging panel-Molly Lawton, JaiLynn Petrie and Cindy Twining for their time and expertise and to Michelle Newman who right now is creating poster art so we can still have a sign on the choir room wall for this show!

This production will conclude with our traditional Senior “Walk-Off” complete with a Mr. Lawton speech and all of your lovely senior pictures and the reading of all choir seniors names, backed by the MSHS Alma Mater.

I’m also very excited to announce we will again be teaming up with Andy O’Reilly and his team at MuskegonChannel.com & our local cable channel 96 to premier this virtual production. A huge shout out to them for their continual support not only of our choir but to the entire Muskegon Community! Our goal right now is to have video editing complete no later than June 1st and we will announce soon, via all types of social media, the date and time that the show will go “live” on the airways! Stay tuned.

SENIOR CHOIR UNIFORM (AND OTHER) COLLECTION INFORMATION Tues. 4/19 @ 4pm-5pm

MSHS SENIOR CHOIR UNIFORM (AND OTHER)

COLLECTION INFORMATION TOMORROW

(Tuesday, May 19th from 4 pm until 5 pm in the MSHS east parking lot, near the orchestra room entrance toward the back of the lot)

It is important that you get this done as it is a condition of receiving your diploma this Friday. If you are unable to attend during this time frame, please contact me via email so we can figure out an alternative time to connect: lawtons@monashores.net

Hey Seniors!

I apologize for this being last minute, but it’s the best we could do under the circumstances!

We need to get your choir uniforms back (and some other things if you have them).

WHAT WE NEED BACK FROM YOU

  • UNIFORM (Top, Tie, Pants)
  • SHOES (OPTIONAL)-Only if you would like to donate them (not required)
  • FOLDER/SHEET MUSIC-IF you have it! Some of you left this in your folder slot at school.
  • MATILDA SCRIPT (if you were in the show). If we get the go ahead to do the show in July, we will get the books back to you. But if we cannot, we don’t want to have to try and get them back later!

Here is the plan: (If you cannot personally drop this off, perhaps someone can do so on your behalf.)

PRE-ARRIVAL

  • Hang a sign or mark your car with your name on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
  • Put all items to be collected in the back seat or trunk of your vehicle.

UPON ARRIVAL

  • Enter the east parking lot (Performing Arts side by the big tower/theater). Head toward the back of the lot.
  • You will be directed to drive to up to one of three tables
  • Do not get out of your car. Pop your trunk if your stuff is in there or make sure your door is unlocked.
  • A parent volunteer (or I) will collect your stuff and make a note of everything you turned in
  • Give us a shout or a wave and head back out of the parking lot!

NOTE:  This collection is for SENIORS ONLY. We plan to allow all current 9th-11th graders to keep their uniforms &  music folders for next school year. We will wait on Matilda scripts too for now.
